108-Year-Old Cape Woman Starts GoFundMe To Keep Living At Home
People raised more than $49,000 to help Juliet Bernstein, 108, pay for care that will let her spend her remaining years at home.
CHATHAM, MA — A 108-year-old Cape Cod woman has lived at her Chatham home for a half-century. Juliet Bernstein, a former New York City school teacher, still has a sharp mind, but physically, she's frail and needs help bathing, dressing herself, and using the bathroom.
Despite needing this care, Bernstein wants to spend her remaining years living at home — but at-home care is expensive. So, Bernstein created a GoFundMe page to help her stay at home and maintain some sense of independence.
"While she has a teacher's pension and Social Security, this can no longer pay for her personal assistants," Bernstein wrote on her GoFundMe page. "She is not eligible for any at-home care from Medicare or Medicaid to cover these expenses."

As of 1:15 p.m., Friday, Bernstein has raised $49,721. She told the Boston Globe she was overwhelmed by the amount of support she received, especially from strangers.
"The response has been phenomenal," Bernstein told the Boston Globe. "My children have given me some help, but they can't afford much. They have to retire, too, and I want to leave something to them."
