As Drought Continues, Barnstable Gets Tough On Water Usage

BARNSTABLE, MA — With summer nearly here, officials are reminding Barnstable residents to follow new water conservation rules.

The restrictions, enacted in March, come as drought conditions continue to strain the region’s water supply.

Among the measures summarized in a Barnstable town publication Friday:

• Residents may not water lawns and outdoor plants more than two days per week.
• The watering is permitted only with a handheld hose or bucket between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. Automatic irrigation systems are not allowed.
• Vehicle washing is banned except at commercial car washes or when necessary for operator safety.
• Residents are prohibited from washing exterior surfaces such as driveways and siding unless the water is needed for projects like painting or pavement work.
• The town has also prohibited filling or refilling swimming pools using onsite water sources.
