BARNSTABLE, MA — A local bus carrying nine people crashed through a fence and into trees Thursday afternoon in Osterville after the driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel, according to police.
Most of the passengers were briefly hospitalized.
Officers rushed to the area of Main Street and Osterville-West Barnstable Road around 1 p.m., where they found the CCRTA bus off the roadway at 1374 Main St., according to a statement.
Police said the bus driver appeared to be experiencing a medical crisis when first responders arrived. There were eight passengers on board in addition to the driver.
Multiple fire departments – including crews from Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills, Hyannis, Barnstable and Cotuit – responded to the crash scene. Five passengers were taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
The bus driver was also transported to the hospital for treatment.
Passengers had to escape the damaged bus through an emergency window as crews worked at the scene. Part of Main Street in Osterville was temporarily closed while emergency responders treated victims and evaluated passengers.
The crash remains under investigation by the Barnstable Police Department.
