HYANNIS, MA — The biggest ambulance service in Massachusetts, based in Hyannis, has just gotten bigger.
Coastal Medical Transportation Systems has acquired Alert Ambulance Service, increasing Coastal's workforce to nearly 1,500, a news release last week said.
Alert was based in Fall River and brings over 200 employees to Coastal, which is headquartered at 372 Yarmouth Road.
The Hyannis company's fleet of ambulances and specialized transport vehicles now stands at 325. The addition of Alert also expands Coastal's service area in Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Coastal pledged there would be no disruption in service to Alert customers as the companies integrate their operations.
Big deal
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
But it strengthens Coastal's position "as one of the region's largest medical transportation providers," the company said.
Coastal at least appears to be the largest in Massachusetts. Based on headcount estimates, the next-largest in the state is Cataldo Ambulance Service, in Somerville, with around 900 employees.
Many Massachusetts cities and towns operate their own ambulances. The emergency medical service in Boston employs more than 400 people.
But private services fill in the gaps and often serve as outsourcers for municipalities. For example, Coastal handles emergency medical transportation in Brookline and Middleborough.
The ambulance industry is highly competitive. Coastal grew previously with its acquisitions of two other services, Fallon and Lifeline, in 2022.
Coastal was founded in 2013 by paramedic and entrepreneur Alex Theoharidis.
