HYANNIS, MA — A routine traffic stop shortly after midnight Monday turned into an unusual police pursuit through a Hyannis neighborhood before two people were arrested.
The driver of a gray 2023 Toyota RAV4 fled after being stopped near Seaboard Lane and headed toward the West End Rotary on West Main Street, traveling up to 15 mph above the speed limit, the Hyannis News reported.
The SUV turned onto Megan Road and through the Connemara Circle and Athlone Way area before pulling into a driveway on Athlone Way, police said.
Officers called in two state police K9 units trained to detect firearms and narcotics after observing the vehicle repeatedly circle the neighborhood. Investigators believe the occupants may have been attempting to discard evidence during the pursuit, according to the news report.
The driver, 22-year-old Jasaya Young of Marstons Mills, was arrested on charges of failure to stop for police, marked lanes violations, speeding, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and operating with a suspended license.
A passenger, 29-year-old Clyde Perry Jr., was also arrested after allegedly struggling with officers. He faces charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, according to Barnstable Police Sgt. Nathan St. Onge.
Both were released on bail pending court proceedings.
