BARNSTABLE, MA — The wait is almost over for oyster lovers in Barnstable as the town prepares to kick off another shellfishing season.
Oyster season officially opens Wednesday, Nov. 4, giving local shellfish enthusiasts a chance to get back on the water and enjoy one of the region's favorite seafood traditions.
Late fall and winter are considered prime oyster harvesting seasons because oysters store glycogen and fats to prepare for colder water, making them particularly sweet and meaty.
While many residents may already have the date circled on their calendars, there are some important regulations to keep in mind before heading out.
Recreational shellfish permit holders are limited to harvesting one-half peck, or 5 dry quarts, of oysters per shellfishing week.
With opening day just around the corner, the town is encouraging residents to prepare their gear, follow local regulations and enjoy oyster season responsibly.
