Barnstable HS Alum Killed In Alaska Avalanche

The 34-year-old was buried while snowboarding with two others Wednesday.

HAINES, AK – A graduate of Barnstable High School died after he was buried by an avalanche Wednesday. David Dzenawagis, 34, was snowboarding in the Takshanuk Mountains near Haines, AK.

Two other skiers with Dzenawagis pulled him from the snow within 7-8 minutes and attempted to revive him, according to KTVA in Alaska. He was pronounced dead at the scene and flown off the mountain.

The Cape Cod Times identified Dzenawagis as a 2002 graduate of Barnstable High School. Dzenawagis attended the University of Alaska Southeast and worked at ski resorts and as a fisherman, according to his Facebook page.

He is the second snowboarder to die in an avalanche in Alaska in less than a week, KTVA reported.
