Bent Leads Red Raiders at Record-Setting Clip

Thanks in large part to the offensive prowess of freshman Molly Bent, the Red Raider girls basketball team is off and running to a 5-1 mark as well as a state-ranking.

It's not every day that someone sets an all-time record at Barnstable High School, in any sport.

Particularly when the school was established in 1873 and its girls varsity basketball program began in 1928.

Even more rare is when a sophomore sets a new all-time mark.

But just five days before Christmas, that's precisely what the gifted third-year varsity guard Molly Bent did when she bucketed 41 of her team's 52 points against archrival New Bedford in a 52-46 victory at home.

Bent's 41 points on December 20, 2012 eclipsed the previous all-time individual mark of 38 points scored in a single game, set on January 31, 1995 against Taunton by BHS Hall of Famer and former Division 1 Collegiate player Tania McIntyre (BHS Class of 1995 - North Carolina A & T).

McIntyre, then a senior, finished her high school career with 1,534 points and at the time she graduated she had set the all-time career scoring mark for boys and girls at BHS. Morgan Kendrew of the Class of 2008 broke that record with 1,544 career points when she, too, was a senior captain for the Red & White. Kendrew's career game-high tally was 34 points versus Central Catholic in the postseason in the winter of 2008.
