Bites Nearby: The Regatta of Cotuit

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Barnstable-Hyannis Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Overview: is located on Falmouth Road in Cotuit is an award winning restaurant with a reputation for quality food and a unique menu. The Regatta is open for dinner, and offers an a la carte menu, as well as a more casual tap room menu. Owner and Executive Chef, Weldon Fizell also currently teaches a cooking class on Mondays and Saturdays; and will host weddings and private parties throughout the year.

Decor: The Regatta is located at the 220 year-old Crocker House, which has recently been listed on the National Registry of Historical Properties. The interior has retained the building's historic charm featuring a beautiful oak bar, eight fireplaces, and hand-pegged posts and beams. The restaurant is cozy and romantic, with candles lighting every table.

Appetizers: The A la Carte menu features a Lobster Bisque with fennel and chive oil ($12), an Apple Fennel Salad ($9), Baked Cotuit Oysters topped with Smoked Bacon and Buttery Leek & Pernod Fondue ($16), and a Maryland Style Crab Cake on an Herb Crusted Tomato($13). The Tap Room menu offers a Wedge of Baby Iceberg Lettuce with Great Hill Bleu Cheese Dressing, Cranberries, Smoked Bacon and Crispy Onions ($9.50), Oysters with a Spicy Herb Mignonette and Bleu Cheese Granita ($15), and Wild Mushroom Spanakopita over Wilted Baby Spinach with a Fresh Herb Sauce, and Roasted Red Pepper Coulis ($10).

Entrees: When you order from the A la Carte menu your entrée is preceded by a Sorbet Intermezzo and a Basket of Housemade Breads. Featured items on the menu are: Pan Roasted Cod over Lace Potato with Jumbo Lump Crab, Fresh Asparagus, Oven Roasted Roma Tomato, Button Mushrooms and Caper Butter Sauce ($32), Honey and Ginger Glazed Salmon Filet served over Roasted Fingerling Potatoes and Sesame Spinach with Wakame Salad and Soy Beurre Blanc ($24),Cast Iron Seared, Premium Filet Mignon with Rosemary Dauphenoise Potato, Sautéed Asparagus & Roasted Cipollini Onions ($34), and Slow Roasted Crispy Lacquered Half Duck  with A Ginger Scallion Pancake, Sautéed Baby Bok Choy And Raspberry Ginger Glaze ($31). The Tap Room menu offers the Tap Burger with Great Hill Bleu Cheese, Grilled Vidalia Onions and the Housemade Smokey BBQ Sauce ($12), Scallops with a Sweet Potato Strudel, Baby Spinach, and a Fresh Herb Butter Sauce ($16), and Pan Seared Sesame Smoked Tiger Shrimp Pad Thai over Rice Noodles with a Ginger Scallion Sauce & Fresh Broccolini ($18).

Desserts: Regatta’s Signature Chocolate Seduction  Decadent Flourless Chocolate Cake Served with Sauce Framboise, Chantilly Cream and Fresh Fruit ($9.50), Fresh Ricotta and Banana Tart with Caramel Ice Cream ($9), Toasted Hazelnut Cakes Layered with Chocolate Ganache ($9),Chocolate Molten Cake with a Poached Seckle Pear, Chocolate Ginger Custard, and Creamy Vanilla Sauce ($10), Brown Sugar Ravioli Filled with a Cream Cheese Pumpkin Filling with a Maple Anise Cream and Spiced Walnut Brittle ($9), Ginger Crème Brulee with Sweet Cinnamon Toast ($10).

Signature Dish: “36 Hour” Tender Boneless Short Rib served with Roasted Baby Potatoes, Haricots Verts & Cool Roasted Shiitake Mushrooms finished with Natural Pan Sauce and Foie Gras Butter ($28).
