What can the handwritten logbooks of 19th-century whaling ships tell us about today’s changing climate? Through groundbreaking collaborative research, oceanographer Caroline Ummenhofer from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Timothy Walker are uncovering how weather observations recorded aboard New England whaling vessels more than 200 years ago are now helping scientists reconstruct long-term changes in global climate and ocean wind patterns.

Their work draws from thousands of pages of historic whaling logbooks dating from 1790 to 1910, preserved in the collections of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Nantucket Historical Association, and Providence Public Library. Written by sailors traveling across some of the most remote oceans on Earth, these records contain daily notes on wind direction, storms, sea conditions, precipitation, and changing weather patterns—captured decades before modern meteorological instruments and satellites existed.

By transforming these descriptive observations into scientific climate data, researchers are gaining new insight into historical wind systems, ocean circulation, and long-term environmental change. The project demonstrates how maritime history and archival research can directly contribute to modern climate science, offering valuable context for understanding today’s rapidly changing world.

The Yarmouth Port Library
Presents
A Look Back at the Cape Cod Canal’s Bridges
With Samantha Gray
Friday, October 30th, 1:00 PM

So much of the focus today is on the future of the bridges that span the Cape Cod Canal. After all, these structures provide a vital link in this community and region. This program, however, will have us looking back in time. What spanned the waterways before? How did our bridges come to be? And what was their impact? With the aid of historic images and film, we’ll explore these stories and more. Q&A time will be available at the end of the program.
Presenter Samantha Gray has been with the US Army Corp of Engineers for 30 years and is a Park Ranger. She works at the Cape Cod Canal where she manages the Canal’s Interpretive Services and Outreach Program as well as the Canal Visitor Center. For her work she has been selected by USACE for multiple awards including regional “Interpreter of the Year” and the American Recreation Coalition’s “Legends Award”. She has a degree in Conservation of National Resources.

Space is limited. Please call the library at 508-362-3717 to reserve your spot.

The Cultural Center of Cape Cod

The Cultural Center of Cape Cod presents Fáilte for an afternoon of traditional and contemporary Irish music. Fáilte, which means “welcome” in Irish, is a dynamic trio of accomplished musicians who evoke the Irish tradition through their music. Their repertoire moves from lively reels, jigs, hornpipes, and polkas, played with ornamentation and energetic melodies, to beautiful waltzes and airs with a slower rhythm, along with songs that tell stories. With fiddle, guitar, piano accordion, whistle, bodhrán, and percussion, Fáilte brings the sounds and spirit of Ireland to life. Inspired by artists and groups including Christy Moore, the Bothy Band, Dervish, and Lúnasa, they connect with audiences through music that is both deeply rooted in tradition and full of life. Come spend a memorable afternoon immersed in Irish music, storytelling, and seasonal joy. Whether Irish music is part of your heritage or you're simply drawn to the energy and beauty of the tradition, Fáilte offers a warm and welcoming celebration for everyone.
