Dolphins have long captured the human imagination as highly intelligent animals capable of complex communication. But what does science actually tell us about how dolphins communicate? Join Dr. Laela Sayigh - Senior Research Specialist, Biology, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - as she explores the evolution of our understanding of dolphin communication, from early assumptions to today’s cutting-edge research. Drawing on her work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, she will highlight the structure and function of dolphins’ distinctive “signature whistles,” as well as other lesser-understood vocalizations.



 This talk will also dive into the innovative tools scientists use to study dolphins, including acoustic tags, playback experiments, and sound monitoring systems that may help prevent mass stranding events. Looking ahead, Dr. Sayigh will discuss how emerging technologies—like artificial intelligence—are shaping the future of marine mammal research.

In this class, you’ll learn the basics of cutting and shaping glass as you design and create a set of four unique markers. We’ll demonstrate how to craft fun fruit and vegetable designs—like carrots, strawberries, and tomatoes—but you’re encouraged to personalize your pieces to match your style and garden. Because the markers will be kiln-fired, they will be ready for pickup one week after the class. If you need your pieces shipped, just let us know—shipping boxes are available for $18.

Step into the world of sculptural glass in this hands-on workshop focused on borosilicate—an incredibly durable and dynamic material. Students will explore how this type of glass behaves in the flame, learning how it moves, stretches, and holds form as it’s shaped.
Using these skills, you’ll create your own miniature glass tree, a project designed to build control and confidence while working with this more complex material. Along the way, you’ll practice shaping techniques, learn how to balance and stabilize your piece so it stands on its own, and experiment with form and flow.
This class blends skill-building with creativity, giving you the chance to explore the possibilities of borosilicate glass while crafting a one-of-a-kind piece to take home.
Safety &amp; What to Expect
This class will be held at our HyArts Campus Flamework Studio
Working with borosilicate glass involves higher temperatures and focused flame work, so safety is essential. All participants must wear 100% cotton or linen clothing (no synthetic fabrics), along with closed-toe shoes. Long hair must be tied back securely before class.
As with all glasswork, your finished tree will need to cool slowly in a kiln overnight to ensure strength and durability. Still searching for the perfect Father’s Day gift? Create something truly one-of-a-kind—a fused glass catch-all dish made by you. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of glass fusing, including how to safely cut and arrange glass to design your own custom piece. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your creativity! After your design is complete, your piece will be kiln-fired and then slumped into a functional dish. Please note that the firing process can take up to two weeks. We’ll notify you as soon as your finished piece is ready for pickup.
