Cape Cod Boaters Rescued In Rough Seas

Rescuers recently saved two boaters in distress in Nantucket Sound.

YARMOUTH, MA — Two boaters in distress were rescued in Nantucket Sound near Yarmouth last week, officials said. The rescue happened about 1.5 south of the Bass River in choppy seas. No one was hurt, though the boaters were almost tossed into the water from rough waves, officials said.

The boaters were eventually towed to safety.

"Officers arrived on scene and were met with sustained winds from the east ... gusting to 35 (mph)," the Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources said in a statement. "Seas were rough and dangerous. Officers immediately instructed both occupants of the vessel to don life vests ... During the entire event seas grew and made conditions dangerous and unfavorable. At two instances occupants of the vessel in need of assistance were nearly thrown from their vessel into the turbulent water due to the high seas and gusty wind."

Officials added, "As National Safe Boating Week comes to an end Friday, we remind all boaters to prepare and be safe when out on the water."
