Cape Cod Landmark Closes For Yearlong Renovations

The Highland Light will remain closed through the 2019 season for a $1.2M restoration project.

TRURO, MA – A Cape Cod landmark held its last day of the season Sunday before closing for a $1.2 million rehabilitation project. Highland Light in Truro will remain closed through 2019 for structural and safety repairs, the Cape Cod National Seashore announced last month.

The original lighthouse at the site was wooden and built in the late 1700s, according to the Highland Light website. A brick tower was built nearby in 1831, and in 1857, they were replaced by a brick lighthouse. That tower was relocated from an eroding cliff 22 years ago.

To make the lighthouse more stable during the move, its existing ventilation system was filled, which accelerated its deterioration, according to the Cape Cod National Seashore.

The rehabilitation process involves reestablishing venting, repairing masonry, replacing windows and corroded elements, improving safety and applying a new breathable coating to the exterior. The lighthouse will be closed to the public in 2019, but the exhibit area and Keeper's Shop will remain open.
