Cape Cod Man Charged In Whale Bone's Disappearance

Authorities found the jaw bone after it was sold to someone in Chatham.

YARMOUTH, MA – Police have recovered a right whale jaw bone that went missing from the International Fund For Animal Welfare in Yarmouthport last week. The bone had been stolen from an outdoor storage area at the fund's headquarters on Wednesday, Dec. 12, police said.

Investigators caught a break when, after news of the theft was made public, they learned the bone had been sold to someone in Chatham. After speaking with the person who bought the bone and a witness at the scene of the theft, police identified the suspect as 76-year-old Paul Doyle, a Dennis Port artist.

Doyle, who will be charged with larceny, told the Cape Cod Times he found the bone in a pile of leaf mulch and thought it was abandoned. He will be summonsed to Barnstable District Court.
