Cape Cod Officials Releasing Shark Report

Cape Cod officials will release a report on how the region can deal with the growing population of great white sharks.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Officials from six Cape Cod towns will release a long-awaited report on how the region can deal with the growing population of great white sharks. The Woods Hole Group, an environmental consulting firm from Bourne, will present its shark report Thursday to the Cape Cod National Seashore, a group of officials from Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans and Chatham. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Nauset Regional High School in Eastham.

The study is expected to examine different strategies the towns can take to deal with the growing great white shark populations off the coasts of these tourist destinations. Some strategies that may be discussed include using sonar detectors, aerial drones and installing shark barriers.

Cape Cod National Seashore Staff, town administers and managers and state and local elected officials will also be in attendance to hear the presentation and answer questions from residents.
