Cape Cod Town Inflates Efforts To Ban Balloons
One community is mulling a ban on "lighter-than-air gas" balloons in an effort to address the dangers posed to wildlife.

ORLEANS, MA – A public hearing has been set to examine a balloon ban in one Cape Cod town. The Orleans Board of Selectmen voted this week to move forward with a draft of a bylaw that would prohibit "lighter-than-air gas" balloons in town, the Cape Cod Times reported.
Similar bans were recently passed in Chatham and Nantucket. The Orleans Conservation Commission has been looking at those in an effort to address the dangers posed to wildlife, particularly sea animals, by the improper disposal of balloons.
The bylaw, which will go into effect in September if passed, would also ban the release of any type of balloon in "any street, alley, waterway, park, beach or other public place in the town of Orleans," according to the Times.
