Au Marche Francais
– Choreography by Jane E. Caputo 2014
Artistic Director of the Cape Conservatory Youth Ballet,
Jane E. Caputo, presents her new Ballet,
Au Marche Francais (At the French Market) to premier
in June 2014. The Ballet is set in Paris
or New Orleans, Montreal or Quebec in an “open air” French market. Au
Marche Francais is a story ballet about a young girl named Lilu. Lilu
arrives penniless and hungry at the market after a very long journey. At the market, Lilu finds the merchants,
Collette (bread), Bridgette (dress maker) and Jeannette (flowers) who are
working very hard to sell their goods.
Also at the market are the Jazzy girls: Mimi who is quick to tears, Cici with her head
always in a book, Fifi who hopes to be a film star someday, Gigi, the sweet dancer and Amilee, a girl who wants
only to shop. But Amilee sees Lilu’s
plight and helps her find all she needs. Amilee helps Lilu to become part of
the market. Lilu sees an acrobat and
rides a carousel. She walks a tightrope
and joins in a waltz. Time passes at
the market. One day represents many
eras. Music changes, jazz is born and
things evolve. But the one constant
theme is that communities are united and that people help one another.
