Centerville Playground Closed For Play Structure Removal

A large wooden play structure needs to be removed from Centerville Playground, prompting a closure the weekend of Aug. 19.

Press release from Town of Barnstable.

BARNSTABLE, MA — The Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Town of Barnstable Community Services Department, will be removing the large wooden play structure at the Centerville Playground on Saturday, August 19 through Sunday, August 20, 2023. In order to safely complete this work the playground and the Centerville Recreation Building’s front and back parking lots will be temporarily closed. The work zone will be fenced and barricaded, remaining off limits to pedestrian access. All work will take place off-road, on Town property, with no impacts to vehicular traffic expected.

Playground evaluations have identified that elements of the wooden play structure have failed, and as a result there have been ongoing efforts to recondition the site. Over the last two years, the Department of Public Works, Community Services Department, and the Centerville Playground Committee, have been advancing designs to renovate the playground. The Town has hosted a series of public information meetings and has accepted public comment throughout the Centerville Playground design process. The most recent conceptual designs were reviewed with the public on January 31, 2023. This meeting can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/He8FNIR3JfQ

The Town plans to host a subsequent public information meeting in early Fall to review the final Centerville Playground design and construction timelines. The project has received Community Preservation Commission (CPC) funding and construction of the new playground is anticipated to commence Spring 2024.
