Child Nearly Drowns At Cape Cod Hotel

The girl was rescued by her teenage brother and cousin, as well as a nearby hotel employee.

YARMOUTH, MA — A child was saved from drowning on Cape Cod thanks to the quick thinking of her family and a motel employee, police said. Emergency crews were called to the Yarmouth Resort around 8:30 p.m. Thursday after a girl was pulled from an indoor swimming pool.

The child was unconscious and not breathing, but CPR was being given at the time of the call, according to police. She had started breathing again by the time emergency crews arrived.

Investigators said the 6-year-old girl and her family were visiting from France and left the girl with her older brother and cousin in the indoor swimming area while they grilled outside. After about 10 minutes, they looked over and the girl was under water.

Her brother and cousin – ages 13 and 14 – pulled her from the water and 19-year-old hotel employee Domantas Kairaitis started CPR. The girl was revived and taken to Cape Cod Hospital in good condition, police said.

"The Yarmouth Police Department commends the quick and decisive actions of the teenagers and hotel employee Kairaitis for helping to save the life of child," police said in a statement.
