D-Y Dolphins Walk Over Red Raiders

Fresh off a Super Bowl in 2013, the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins beat the host Barnstable High School Red Raiders, 36-21, on Opening Night 2014

The Dolphins never looked back.

Capitalizing on a couple of offensive miscues on behalf of the host Barnstable High School Red Raiders, the Dennis-Yarmouth green and white rolled into the end zone in less than one minute in the first quarter and when the dust finally settled, the visitors defeated the Red & White, 36-21.

Senior quarterback Mike Dunn punched it into the end zone from the 7-yard line at 8:37 of the first quarter and then he hit Andrew Jamiel for the two-point PAT and it was quickly 8-0. the Dolphins’ strategy seemed to click from the get-go, as the guests won the coin toss, deferred to Barnstable and the Red Raiders went three and out before watching a snap sail 40 yards into the Red Zone on a bad punt snap.

Dunn scored again with 5:02 left in the 2nd quarter on a 16-yard scamper to make it 14-0 (PAT failed).

But Barnstable showed considerable promise when junior quarterback Griffin Burke (8-22, 174 yds, INT, 3 TDs) lofted a bomb to the corner from 35 yards out and found Nathan Balthazard for the score to make it 14-6. Senior kicker Akeem McPherson split the uprights and it was 14-7. The Red Raider defense then stepped up and forced the Dolphins to go three and out with Barnstable in prime position to score and tie the ballgame on the Dolphin 26. A false start, an incompletion and then a 95-yard interception for a touchdown by Jamiel, however, took the wind out of the Red Raiders’ sails. Dunn ran in the two-point PAT and the guests never relented in spite of some pretty nifty catches from BHS senior Bo Delaney and junior wideout Eric Holzman.

Both Delaney and Holzman scored Barnstable’s other touchdowns. Delaney also notched 109 yards on the day on just three catches. Barnstable senior running back DeMichael Johnson had a spectacular game with 19 carries for 127 yards, but did not have a shot at the end zone.

Two key fumbles on Barnstable’s behalf - as well as a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct personal fouls - further hindered the Red Raiders’ ability to stage a true comeback. Ian Crosby also scored for the Dolphins and Jamiel tacked on another touchdown in the 4th quarter.

Barnstable (0-1) heads to Marshfield next Friday night for a 7:00 pm game.
