CAPE COD, MA — A fundraising effort to install shark-detecting sonar buoys off Cape Cod has fallen through this year, as the organizers say it is too late to install them. The GoFundMe campaign raised over $36,000 of its $200,000 goal, which will be returned to donors, according to the Cape Cod Times.

The campaign was named the Arthur Clever Buoy Pilot in honor of Arthur Medici, a 26-year-old man who was fatally attacked off Wellfleet by a great white shark in September. Its aim was to fund a three-month test run of two buoys off the coast of Cape Cod.

Organizer Heather Doyle told the Times they couldn't get a community or the Cape Cod National Seashore to install the buoys.

More advanced methods of improving shark safety, including sonar buoys, drones and nets, are being examined on Cape Cod. Local officials have said they would like to wait for a report by consulting firm Woods Hole Group before launching additional shark-repellent efforts. The final report is expected to be released in September.
