Driver Medflighted After Cape Cod Crash

A driver was medflighted after he struck a tree and rolled his vehicle in Harwich Monday; police said "excessive speed" was a factor.

HARWICH, MA — A driver was seriously injured in Harwich Monday night after authorities said he veered off Route 39, struck a tree and rolled his vehicle. The crash happened by a rotary near Orleans Road at about 10:30 p.m. The driver was trapped in the vehicle, fire officials said.

First responders used cutting equipment to reach the man and pulled him from the wreckage, fire officials said. The man was transported Barnstable Municipal Airport, where he was then medflighted to a Rhode Island hospital due to the severity of his injuries. "The crash remains under investigation at this time but it is clear that excessive speed is a contributing factor," Harwich police said in a statement. "Harwich Fire responded and after an intensive extrication operation they were able to free the driver from the vehicle."

It took first responders about 15 minutes to free the man, authorities said.
