Edith Vonnegut Displays Painting at March for Our Lives Event

Cape Cod residents joined local artist Edith Vonnegut as she carried Stopping Bullets banner at gun control demonstration.

Barnstable resident and noted artist, Edith Vonnegut, recently joined thousands of protesters including a large contingent of Cape Cod residents who marched to the Boston Common at the “March for Our Lives” demonstration against gun violence. Edie and her husband, John Squibb, carried a banner featuring her painting, “Stopping Bullets”, from Vonnegut’s series entitled “Domestic Goddesses” depicting women’s roles in modern society.

“I painted this banner and marched with it in Washington DC seventeen years ago for the Million Mom March on Mother’s Day May 14, 2000. Nothing has changed in all these years. In fact, things have gotten worse due to our legislators letting the assault weapons ban expire. I marched this banner again in Boston on March 24, 2018, hopefully for the last time.” commented Vonnegut.

News reports estimated the Boston March for Our Lives crowd size to be in the 50-100,000 range. Among those attending from Cape Cod were Barnstable Village resident Fred Schilpp, who said:

“This was different. At 75, I’ve protest-marched many times and there is always the serenity of sharing deep emotional feelings. But this was different. Being led by teenagers and their spirit of youth and innocence, and young families and teachers, screaming and shouting their disgust and anger and fear of this dreadful terrifying societal failure. Only in America can a child legally buy an AK-15 equipped to kill hundreds in a short period of time, walk out of a store into the community.

But on Saturday, in marching with this endless parade of people of all colors with their homemade signs, I was also uplifted by the show of power of this new generation.”

Vonnegut intends to make the Stopping Bullets image available to the March for Our Lives organization and its 800 affiliates as well as other leading gun control advocacy groups for their use in continuing efforts. Her hope is to see the image on billboards across the country.
