Election Results: Whelan Leads In 1st Barnstable District
With just under 62 percent of the vote in, Rep. Tim Whelan is in the lead over Democratic challenger Josh Mason.

Mason, a bartender and member of the Dennis Planning Board, has tried to position his campaign as one that work for the needs of year-round residents, and not just those involved in Cape Cod's four-month seasonal economy. As a bartender, Mason said he shares the pain and frustration of residents struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"It (the district) has prioritized high-value seasonal residents," Mason said in a debate on Cape Cod's local NPR station. "Other residents have been overlooked."

Whalen, whose served as a state representative since 2015, highlighted his experience and tried to position himself as a strong leader to help the district through the rest of the pandemic.
Whalen said he's on the committee that helps write the state budget, and within that role was part of creating a $3 billion rainy day fund for the state, the largest in the nation among state governments.
"Public service is in my blood and this role I've been blessed to fill for the people of the 1st Barnstable District has been quite a trip, and we’ve accomplished a lot," Whalen said during the debate.
