Fatal Barnstable Police Cruiser Crash: Officer ID'd

Barnstable police Officer David Heise struck and killed a pedestrian on Route 28 Sunday, authorities said.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Authorities have identified the Barnstable police officer involved in a fatal crash Sunday. Barnstable police Officer David Heise struck a pedestrian on Route 28 at about 2 a.m. as he responded to a call, authorities said. The pedestrian, a man, died at the scene. His name was not released. Heise suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened on Route 28 in the 1300-block section.

A preliminary investigation "indicates the victim was walking in the center of the road and was not at a crosswalk," according to state police. "The Barnstable officer was responding to a call for service with the cruiser’s lights and siren activated when it struck the victim in the middle of Route 28."

Barnstable police said in a statement Tuesday that a vehicle traveling east pulled to the side of the road as Heise drove around.

"As the cruiser passed by the vehicle, it struck a pedestrian standing in the middle of the road. Several witnesses gave statements that confirm these facts," Barnstable police said in a statement.

Police said they have identified the pedestrian but are withholding his name pending notification of family.
