'Hazardous Conditions' Close Centerville Playground

A project to redesign the playground is expected to start this spring. For now, the playground is closed for unrelated issues.

HYANNIS, MA — The Centerville Playground, a site the town has often tried to revitalize, will be closed again.

Officials announced that "hazardous conditions" were observed at the playground, prompting the decision to close the site "until further notice."

"The Town continues to pursue efforts to recondition the site," officials said. "Over the last two years, the Department of Public Works, Community Services Department, and the Centerville Playground Committee, have been advancing designs to renovate the playground."

In August 2023, the playground was closed for the removal of a large wooden play structure after officials said elements of its structure had failed.

Public information meetings have been held about the playground, and officials have also accepted public comment on the ongoing design process. Those were reviewed publicly on Nov. 21, 2023.

The project has received Community Preservation Commission (CPC) funding and construction of the new playground is anticipated to begin this spring.
