Hot Bartender, Cool Drink

Avoid scurvy--visit bartender Kim Vachula at the British Beer Company in Hyannis.

In between pouring drinks, she answered 5 questions for us:

What do you wish people knew about bartending?

That bartending involves skill.  That we’re not just idiots who can’t find another job.  That we want to be here!

Is this your career, or is it just paying the bills?

This is my career.  I have been at the BBC full-time for five years now. Besides that, though, I enjoy taking care of my house and I’m getting married in June!

Bartenders talk to a lot of people every day—tell us about the most bizarre person or experience from work.

On a random Monday, there was some kind of fire-fighters convention. Besides being the nicest people in the world, they were also my best tippers ever.

What one quality separates a regular bartender from an unforgettable one?

I think if you remember just one thing, it makes people feel really good. There’s this woman from Nantucket, and she comes here maybe twice a year, but I always remember what she likes to drink. People like to feel that they have made a mark on someone, and that’s what I like to provide.

People come to you to let off some steam and relax—what is your favorite spot in town to do the same?

I come here, to the BBC, and also Embargo's and Sam Diego’s.

For drinks, Kim makes sure her guests get their daily dose of vitamin C.

Here’s how:

 Vitamin C Shot:

In a shaker filled with ice, pour:

 0.5 oz citrus vodka

0.5 oz cranberry vodka

0.5 oz orange vodka

Splash of grapefruit juice

Splash of cranberry juice

Shake and strain into small rocks glass.
