Hyannis Man Charged In $70,000 Check Fraud Scheme

Police said Robert Barnhill, of Hyannis, would dress up as a construction worker and deposit fake checks from Cape businesses.

HYANNIS, MA — A Hyannis man pleaded not guilty after prosecutors said he was involved in stealing about $70,000 in a check fraud scheme at Cape Cod banks. Robert Barnhill, 55, was charged Tuesday with uttering false documents, attempting to commit a crime and conspiracy.

Yarmouth police told the Cape Cod Times they began investigating Barnhill in July after discovering counterfeit checks cashed against a local business. Police said they discovered more fake checks on the Cape and South Shore. According to authorities, other men that would often dress up as construction workers when depositing checks were also involved in the scheme. Barnhill was arrested in late July.
