Hyannis Man Charged With Car Break-Ins

Police said a Cape Cod man targeted nearly 40 cars during a series of crimes that began over the summer.

HYANNIS, MA — A 19-year-old from Cape Cod faces charges related to over 20 car break-ins in the Hyannis area, police said.

On Sept. 19, Jakari Sylvia, of Hyannis, was arrested and charged with breaking into, or attempting to break into, 21 cars in the Hyannis area.

"These crimes all occurred while Sylvia was out on personal recognizance after being charged with breaking into and attempting to break into 18 motor vehicles during July 2024," local police said.

Since Sylvia’s arrest and release in July, Barnstable police have continued to receive reports of vehicles being broken into and three vehicles actually being stolen, officials said.

Based on an investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Sylvia on Sept. 19. Sylvia was taken into custody at his residence later that day. Officials executed a search warrant at his home that resulted in them collecting property reported stolen during those break-ins.

Sylvia was arraigned on Sept. 20 at Barnstable District Court on multiple attempted and successful break-ins, larceny from a motor vehicle and three counts of larceny of a motor vehicle.

Officials said Sylvia has targeted 39 cars during the series of crimes. He was ordered held on $2,250 bail and GPS monitoring with a curfew if that bail is posted.
