Marshfield Rams Hand Red Raiders 2nd Loss

The host Marshfield Rams (1-1) basically manhandled the visiting Barnstable Red Raiders (0-2), 31-12

Friday night was hopping in Marshfield.

Unfortunately for the visiting Barnstable High Red Raiders (0-2), it was mainly hopping for the host Marshfield High Rams (1-1). The Rams defeated the Red Raiders, 31-12, before a sizeable home crowd at Anderson FIeld.

Barnstable senior running back DeMichael Johnson rallied for 148 all-purpose yards and one touchdown while Eric Holzman (2 receptions, 49 yards) made a pair of brilliant catches and helped bring the score to 19-12 in the waning moments of the first half.

But it was not nearly enough as Marshfield quarterback Jack Masterson carved up the Red Raider secondary, as did his running backs, Jacob Maher, Frank Catanoso, Adam McNamara, Chris Lunn and Neal Parry.

While Barnstable put the first points on the scoreboard with an excellent 10-play drive in the opening of the first quarter (Johnson, 26-yard touchdown rush at 5:49), Marshfield quickly returned the favor. After a 55-yard kickoff return by McNamara, lightning-quick Frank Catanoso took it in from the three-yard line and Eddie Kielty split the uprights to make it 7-6, Rams, with 3:45 left in the 1st quarter.

Parry scored the Rams’ second touchdown of the game on a three-yard run at 8:51 of the second quarter and Barnstable just never found the answer.

Senior co-captain Colton Bergal once again led the Red Raiders in tackles from his spot at inside linebacker. Brener DeSouza also played well, defensively for the visiting Red Raiders, as did defensive lineman and senior co-captain Owen Murray.

All totalled, Marshfield ran off 80 offensive plays to Barnstable’s 50 plays in the affair. Next week, Barnstable faces BC High at home.
