Michael Barnett, M.D. is honored by Barnstable District Medical Society as 2014 Community Clinician of the Year

Waltham – May 1 –Falmouth physician and resident Michael R. Barnett, M.D. has been honored by his physician peers of the Barnstable District Medical Society as the district’s 2014 Community Clinician of the Year, an honor recognizing his professionalism and contributions as a physician. He received the award April 30 at the district society’s annual meeting at the Coonamesett Inn in Falmouth. 

 

Board-certified in internal medicine and presently in private practice, Dr. Barnett has practiced primary care medicine in Falmouth for nearly four decades. Among many responsibilities over the years at Falmouth Hospital, he has served as Chair of the Department of Medicine, Chief of the Medical Staff, and a member of the Board of Trustees. He is currently Director of the Medical Education Committee at the hospital.

In addition to his private practice and hospital duties, Dr. Barnett shares his expertise with local health care facilities in Falmouth. He has served for nearly 20 years as the medical director for the Royal Nursing and Alzheimer’s Center, the Gosnold Alcohol and Drug and Rehabilitation Center, and Falmouth Care and Rehabilitation Center, and he is a staff physician and medical consultant for JML Care Center.

A member of the Massachusetts Medical Society since 1979, Dr. Barnett received his medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University in Albany, New York. Since 1993, he has been an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine.   

 

The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society’s 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community. The Barnstable District is comprised of nearly 500 physicians who live or work on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.  

 

The Massachusetts Medical Society, with more than 24,000 physicians and student members, is dedicated to educating and advocating for the patients and physicians of Massachusetts. The Society, under the auspices of NEJM Group, publishes the New England Journal of Medicine, a leading global medical journal and web site, and NEJM Journal Watch alerts and publications covering 13 specialties. The Society is also a leader in continuing medical education for health care professionals throughout Massachusetts, conducting a variety of medical education programs for physicians and health care professionals.
