Plastic Bag Ban: Another Cape Cod Town on Board

Sandwich officials approved a plastic bag ban that goes into effect next year.

SANDWICH, MA — Sandwich officials last week voted to ban most types of plastic bags, becoming the latest Cape Cod community to do so. Falmouth's plastic bag went into effect in August; Barnstable and Provincetown also have bans in place.

"Sandwich has taken on a leading role today in protecting our environment," the Sandwich Green Coalition said in a statement. The group lobbied town officials to pass the ban, which goes into effect in the fall of 2017.

Grocery stores, clothing retailers, pharmacies, and other retails stores will be forced to follow the ban, which outlaws single-use, handled plastic bags. Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own reusable shopping bags.
