Police Find Remains of 8-Year-Old Killed in Fire

Neighbors told officials that an explosion caused the shed fire in Barnstable.

An 8-year-old boy was killed in a shed fire in Barnstable on Monday evening.

Neighbors called 911 after they heard an explosion and saw flames in a shed behind 252 Hinckley St. around 5:30 p.m., NECN reported.

Emergency crews found the remains of the boy after they extinguished the shed fire.

There were three children playing in the area near the shed at the time of the fire. Two children were evaluated for injuries and were not brought to the hospital, Cape Cod Times reported.

Investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started, why the kids were in the shed and what caused the fire.

Officials are calling the incident a tragic accident and said the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Investigators are not releasing the name of the victim, NECN reported.
