Salt Pond Visitor Center Closed After Extreme Cold On Cape Cod

The Cape Cod National Seashore said the location would be closed until further notice after issues over the abnormally cold weekend.

EASTHAM, MA — The Cape Cod National Seashore is still open to visit, but don't plan on stopping by the visitor center just yet.

Seashore officials announced that the visitor center would be closed until further notice after extreme cold caused problems at the Eastham location.

On Facebook, the Seashore shared a photo of water draining onto the sidewalk in front of the visitor center, adding that a burst pipe caused it.

According to National Weather Service records, temperatures were recorded as low as -9 over the weekend, with wind chills dipping as low as -36.

The visitor center wasn't alone in having issues with pipes across the weekend, according to the Eastham Fire Department.

Officials said the department received a number of calls about burst pipes, citing the unprecedented freeze. In fact, the fire department itself had a pipe burst.
