'Selfie' Disguise Fail: Alleged Barnstable Jewelry Thief Caught

Barnstable police said career criminal James Anderson stole $10,000 worth of jewelry from Kmart Thursday—while wearing a "SELFIE" cap.

BARNSTABLE, MA — An alleged jewelry thief didn’t do himself any favors when police said he hit the Barnstable Kmart then fled wearing an attention-grabbing cap that reads “SELFIE.”

James Anderson, 65, allegedly stole $10,000 worth of gold jewelry Thursday night. He was arrested a few hours later after police said they used security camera footage to track him down.

Police said Anderson is a career criminal, with a rap sheet that includes 78 criminal charges—mostly for theft and drugs. He was held in custody pending an arraignment Friday.

Police said Anderson, who was wearing the “SELFIE” cap when he walked into Kmart, used wire cutters to remove the jewelry from a display case. An officer then pulled over his vehicle on Main Street and identified him as the theft suspect from the security camera footage. Anderson was still wearing the cap in the car, police said.

The stolen jewelry was recovered.
