Some Cape Cod Movie Theaters Reopen, Others Not Until End Of July

Movie theaters were allowed to start reopening on July 6, but ones in Hyannis and Mashpee will be closed for weeks.

HYANNIS, MA — If you were planning to escape to an air-conditioned movie theater during this week's steamy weather, you can, but several major theaters are still closesd

Phase 3 of Gov. Charlie Baker's reopening plan began on Monday, and that means movie theaters can begin to open again with screenings limited to 25 people or fewer. But most Cape Cod theaters won't reopen this week — and likely won't until the end of July.

Heritage Theaters in Sandwich opened five indoor theaters Monday. So far, the theater has showed "Jaws," "Mission Impossible" and other classic films. Heritage plans to open three other theaters in the next few days once projectors are ready.

Regal, which operates a cinema at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis and one in Mashpee, plans to reopen its theaters on July 31. Entertainment Cinemas in South Dennis, Falmouth and Edgartown also won't reopen until at least the end of July.

Drive-in theaters have been an option on the Cape since phase two of the state's reopening plan. Wellfleet Cinemas remains open and has shown "Black Panther," various "Star Wars" films and other movies. A drive-in theater also opened on Main Street in Hyannis and has shown classic films like "The Goonies" and more recent movies like "The Finest Hours."
