Spectacle of Trees Open at JFK Museum

Ready to win a fully decorated tree loaded with presents?

If last year’s Christmas tree didn’t come bedecked with decorations, lights and gifts—and if it didn’t help support any of the Cape’s non-profit organizations—then check out the “Spectacle of Trees” event for an opportunity to win big.

Founded by Bill Murphy, president of Cape Cod Charitable FunRaisers, the “Spectacle of Trees” involves 16 non-profits, each of which has lavishly decorated a tree which is on display at the in Hyannis.

Per tradition, each tree not only has the usual lights and ornaments, but also presents.  Cape Cod Young Professionals decorated their tree this year with a “Twelve Months of Christmas” theme: January includes a “Great Northern Getaway” with a ski retreat to Maine and a restaurant certificate.

The Barnstable Education Foundation has restuarant gift certificates, an iPad, private stargazing with Mike Gyra among other presents.

Community members can purchase “tree bucks” for $10 each.  Then, they can place a tree buck in a box in front of the tree they want to win.  All of the profits go to that tree’s organization.  There is no limit to how many tree bucks can be purchased.

In fact, the more the better.  “The annual earnings for the Spectacle event have been: $7500 [in 2006], $15,000 [in 2007], $25,000 [in 2008], $38,000 [in 2009] and $78,000 raised in 2010,” Murphy reported.  “I would expect that to be exceeded this year with a hopeful goal of $100,000.”

When asked about how the non-profits are chosen, Murphy said, “For several years we have had a core of 10-12 organizations that have done Trees year after year. We fill out the roster on a first come first chosen manner.  We have had as many as 20 Trees for the event but have found that number to be too much...simply not enough room to showcase and view.”

The “Spectacle of Trees” will open to view during these times:

Friday, 12/2 10am-8pm

Saturday, 12/3 10am-8pm

Sunday, 12/4 noon-4pm

Friday, 12/9 10am-8pm

Winners will be announced Saturday, 12/10 at 7:40pm—good luck!
