In the closing days of World War II, as a reward for rescuing Italian
masterpieces from Nazi hands, artist Lorenzo Frasca leaves Italy for
the United States, hoping to embark on a career as a prominent painter.
Out of pity, he has unwisely married Tulia, a cruel and crazed woman.
To make ends meet, he paints apartment hallways, a soul wearying
experience. While painting the parish church as a promise to the priest
who has tried to tame Tulia, he meets Anna, a beautiful older woman who
becomes his lover and his muse. Brought low by loss, Lorenzo’s painted
church brings him to the attention and patronage of a Spanish prince who
challenges him to achieve his masterwork.
The Painter takes readers on an artist’s grand tour, infusing the
narrative with visions of landscapes, paintings and the complex beauty
of the Alhambra.
Lois Swann, novelist and poet, is the author of The Mists of Manittoo
and of its sequel, Torn Covenants. A native New Yorker, she presently
resides on Cape Cod with her husband, a sea captain.
