Today's riddle: What has a tail, but no body? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Barnstable Officer Struck by Pickup Outside ZZ Top Concert, Hospitalized With Multi-System Trauma; Driver Arrested [HN Video] (hyannisnews.com) — A Barnstable police officer working a concert detail in Hyannis was struck by a pickup on West Main Street Sunday night and rushed to Cape Cod Hospital with serious multi-system trauma. West Main Street was shut down for reconstruction work, and the driver was arrested after struggling with field sobriety tests. The officer remained hospitalized Monday as the investigation continued.
2. Barnstable correctional officers vote 'no confidence' in sheriff (boston25news.com) — Barnstable County correctional officers have unanimously voted no confidence in Sheriff Donna Buckley and Superintendent Ned McCormick, citing unsafe conditions, low morale, and contract issues. Buckley strongly disputes the claims, arguing higher spending reflects long-overdue pay raises to recruit and retain officers. The union is calling for more public scrutiny of jail management and finances.
3. Cape Cod police officer's OUI arraignment delayed after he enters treatment program (boston25news.com) — A Sandwich police officer's OUI arraignment at Barnstable District Court has been delayed after he entered a treatment program, pushing his case to October 15 while he remains on leave. In a separate incident learned at the courthouse, a Barnstable police officer was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic near the Cape Cod Melody Tent, with the driver facing arraignment and the officer's condition still unknown.
4. Massachusetts crews bring raccoon to wildlife hospital still stuck in storm-drain grate (thecooldown.com) — A young raccoon in Barnstable was rescued after getting its head stuck in a storm-drain grate and arriving at Cape Wildlife Center still attached to the metal. Bourne emergency crews removed the grate and transported the animal, while wildlife staff sedated it and freed it using canola oil and plastic bags. The raccoon is recovering under observation with no major injuries reported so far.
5. Cape Cod shellfish farmers show the value of locally grown food (publicnewsservice.org) — Cape Cod shellfish farmers, including those supported by Barnstable County's marine program, are using new signs at 37 aquaculture sites to show residents how local oysters and quahogs are grown safely. The effort follows a summer of food recalls and aims to build trust in local seafood, backed by nearly $7 million in state grants. Officials say shellfish farms boost the economy while filtering coastal waters.
