Funded by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, Middlesex Community College offers the Career Pathways Program for Early Childhood Education (ECE). The program supports students earning their certificates while strengthening the workforce. Funding for the program goes toward college tuition, course materials, fees, tutoring services, and career and college advising.
“The resources through this grant have allowed me flexibility and time efficiency to earn my degree,” said Arianna Tindal, an MCC ECE student, of Marlborough. “I have been teaching since I was 15 years old through my technical high school. And from there I furthered my education to become lead certified, and then director certified. Without this program, I would have had a financial hardship, and it would have taken me a lot longer to have the ability to earn my certifications, and hopefully soon my associate degree.”
Similar to many students in the program, Tindal works while pursuing her degree. To make getting an education easier, MCC’s program provides stackable pathways and wraparound supports such as advising, tutoring and financial aid. The goal is to provide accessible and flexible learning to increase persistence and graduation for students in the field.
“My education at MCC is helping me build both confidence and professional skills as an educator,” said Zinnat Ferdausy, an MCC ECE student, of Lexington. “I am currently working as a Pre-K Lead Teacher in a childcare center, and what I am learning directly supports my daily teaching practice, classroom management, and lesson planning. This program gave me the opportunity to gain the required knowledge, certifications, and hands-on experience needed to grow professionally in this field.”
In November 2025, Vanessa Porter started as MCC’s new ECE Career Pathways Grant Coordinator. Bringing a strong background in ECE and nonprofit program leadership, Porter’s focus is on expanding access and improving outcomes for children and educators.
“The program benefits students by reducing financial barriers through access to financial aid, scholarships and grant funding, while also providing coordinated, collegewide support systems that help students navigate every step – from enrollment through completion,” Porter said. “Students receive consistent advising, academic support, and guidance that make it easier to stay on track and succeed. The program also creates clear, achievable pathways for career advancement in early education, allowing students to build credentials step by step and move into higher-level roles.”
As the Grant Coordinator, Porter manages grant operations, builds partnerships within the community and at the state level, and coordinates collegewide efforts to strengthen student access, persistence and completion. She also provides one-on-one advising and support to students.
With more than seven years of experience, Porter worked as Site Manager for Jumpstart at UMass Lowell (UML). In this role, she led program operations serving over 120 children each year while supervising and mentoring over 40 AmeriCorps members. Starting her journey as a student at UML, Porter studied psychology and criminal justice where she developed an interest in child development, equity, and community-based support systems.
“My professional experience – combined with my educational background – has shaped my commitment to strengthening the early childhood workforce and supporting diverse learners,” Porter said. “I am excited to have the opportunity to leverage my leadership, grant management, and advising expertise to strengthen MCC’s ECE initiatives, positively impact student outcomes, build partnerships across departments, deliver high-quality student support, and advance equitable access to higher education.”
In the Spring 2026 semester, Porter and MCC’s ECE Program are collaborating with the offices of Admissions, Advising, Financial Aid and Academic Support to strengthen pathways. The program is also offering the full Introductory Teacher Certificate in Spanish to expand access for multilingual educators. These initiatives help meet the needs of students while ensuring children and families in the communities are served by well-prepared and responsive educators.
“The Career Pathways program has been an important investment in our students and the early childhood workforce – removing barriers, expanding access, and creating opportunities for educators to advance their professional practice with children and families,” said Michelle Dobrin, MCC’s Education Department Chair. “Vanessa brings the leadership and vision to strengthen this work and ensure our students are supported every step of the way.”
