In the Fall 2026 semester, Middlesex Community College will launch the Bridges to College program. Funding will assist adult learners who have taken noncredit courses at Middlesex in transitioning into credit programs at the college in the healthcare and technical fields.
“At MCC, we know that adult learners who complete our workforce programs have the drive to go further,” said Matthew Olson, MCC’s Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “They just need the right support to get there. The Bridges to College initiative helps build that pathway, connecting graduates of our noncredit programs with the advising, academic preparation, and financial aid resources they need to succeed in credit-bearing coursework. We are proud to expand our commitment to the adult learners who are the backbone of our community and local workforce.”
As part of the Bridges to College program, students will have access to a dedicated advisor to help them reach their goals and complete their program pathway. This includes health, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and advanced manufacturing.
Advisors can assist students in creating a transition plan, choosing support courses, and connecting to collegewide support services and resources, including free tutoring. There will also be check-ins and coaching through the start of the term to keep students on track.
Students in the program will also receive refreshers on reading and writing, applied math for health and technical fields, digital readiness, and college expectations, as well as assistance for the placement process for math and English courses. The goal of the program is to provide a structured pathway to guide adult learners through degree completion to enter the workforce.
Many of MCC’s programs also provide students with a chance to apply the knowledge they learn in classes to real-world experiences. Options include the Learn and Earn program, internships, Service-Learning, lab and clinicals, and networking and information sessions with employer partners.
All students – including those in the Bridges to College program – may qualify for financial aid. MCC encourages students to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or MAFSA (Massachusetts Application for State Financial Aid) to find out their eligibility. The MassEducate and MassReconnect programs allow all Massachusetts residents who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree to attend MCC for free.
Over the summer, Middlesex will provide an overview of the noncredit to credit transition process. The event will include introductions from MCC’s Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Veteran and Military Affairs, Student Access and Support Services and the Academic Centers for Enrichment. Representatives from the math and English departments will also be available to discuss placement and answer questions.
The Bridges to College program is an opportunity for adult learners to gain the necessary skills and education needed to advance in their careers, according to Matthew Gustavsen, MCC’s liberal arts adjunct faculty member.
“MCC courses are one of the most affordable options for students wanting to continue their education,” Gustavsen said. “It also allows students to utilize their completed noncredit courses by transferring into credit pathways. Registration for fall courses is open throughout the summer, and MCC offers comprehensive support for all programs.”
