Get Set Up for SUCCESS with the SUCCESS Scholars’ Academic Workshop Conference

This Fall, Middlesex Community College will host the SUCCESS Scholars Academic Workshop Conference to guide students as they navigate college. Run by the college's SUCCESS Scholars Program, the conference will set students up for success as they begin the new semester.

"MCC's SUCCESS Scholar events and resources are important because they help students build meaningful connections, find guidance, and feel that they belong," said Vanratanak Peng, a SUCCESS Scholars mentor and international student from Cambodia. "For students who may be new to college, new to the country, or still figuring out their goals, having mentors and a supportive community can make a major difference. The program not only helps students succeed academically but also gives them the confidence to become leaders and support others in return."

The conferences prepare students for classes by teaching them how to understand their syllabus, work with online tools, improve time-management skills and more. During the sessions, students will learn how to adjust to college expectations, manage their workload, and take advantage of MCC's resources and support systems.

Led by a team of experienced staff, the conferences will offer relatable experiences and expert knowledge. Students can make valuable connections with SUCCESS mentors and peers while building new skills and gaining confidence. Mentors will give students the tools they need to support their academic, career, and personal paths.

"My mentor became more than someone who offered academic or professional advice – he became a lifelong friend," Peng said. "His mentorship inspired me to become a mentor myself, so I could provide other students with the same encouragement, advice, and support that he gave me. I learned that success is not just from academic achievement, but also working on personal growth and finding mentees who need that same support."

The SUCCESS conference will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14 in the Bedford Campus Center and on Wednesday, September 15 in the Lowell Cowan Center Cafeteria. Participating students will earn a completion certificate and have the chance to win prizes, including a new laptop.​

MCC's SUCCESS Scholars Program supports Asian American, Black, African American, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ students with academic coaching and mentorship, financial wellness services and career development guidance. While the SUCCESS Scholars Workshop series is tailored to SUCCESS-eligible students, all MCC students are encouraged to attend and participate.

"The conference is a great opportunity for students to learn about the resources and support services available to them through SUCCESS," said Farrorza Lim, MCC's Senior Success Scholars Coach. "It is a great fit for new and returning students who may need additional support with adjusting to college expectations, managing their workload, or learning how to make the most of the tools and resources available to them."
