Middlesex Community College is excited to announce John Keller as the new Coordinator of Athletics and Student Engagement. Bringing more than 20 years of leadership in education and community athletics, he most recently served as Assistant Athletic Director and Physical Education & Wellness Teacher at Notre Dame Academy. At Middlesex, he hopes to build sports and wellness programming and activities through partnerships with UMass Lowell and in the Fitness Center on MCC's Bedford Campus.
"I am committed to developing student-athletes, promoting wellness, and creating athletic programs that foster leadership, resilience and community engagement," Keller said. "MCC has partnered with UMass Lowell Intramurals, giving us so many great opportunities to play sports against other students from both colleges."
Keller holds a Master of Arts in Coaching Administration from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from California State University, Humboldt. During this time, he was a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II football student-athlete. He also holds a professional certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), as well as certifications in coaching, wellness and safety.
In his previous role at Notre Dame Academy, Keller supported athletics administration and built programming for student-athletes. He coached multiple sports and developed strength and conditioning programs that promoted student wellness, leadership and participation in athletics.
In addition to his work in secondary education athletics, Keller worked with various community wellness and athletics initiatives. Coaching for the Special Olympics, he guided powerlifters to gold and silver medals at the World Games. He also works as a USA Basketball official and volunteers in youth and adaptive sports programming.
At Middlesex, Keller works with the college's Office of Student Engagement (OSE). OSE focuses on helping students gain meaningful experiences and career readiness through leadership opportunities and activities. Running all MCC clubs, organization, and affinity groups, OSE promotes student belonging and wellness through a variety of events throughout the school year.
To meet OSE's mission, Keller provides students with opportunities to explore belonging and leadership through athletics and activity. As the Coordinator of Athletics and Student Engagement, he oversees the operations of the athletic department through event management, facility operations, and more.
Keller plans to use his expertise in educational athletics programming to develop MCC's recreational, intramural, and intercollegiate opportunities. His goal is to foster belonging and health among students. He is excited to expand MCC's athletics and wellness opportunities.
"MCC's athletics programming will support our students and give them every opportunity to improve their lifestyles," Keller said. "We currently have games in volleyball and soccer, and signups have started for basketball, dodgeball, and broomball. We also offer all types of different activities throughout the school year, which are free for all MCC students and staff. I look forward to leading these opportunities."
