At Middlesex Community College, students gain hands-on, practical experiences in and outside of the classroom. For students interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), Middlesex offers the STEM Engineering Club to connect, exchange ideas, and help each other as they pursue the field.
"A goal of mine is to create a mentorship setting in which students can learn from one another's experience," said Ratheksuchen Dy, an MCC mechanical engineering student, of Lowell. "I also wish to assist them in finding out about various resources and opportunities offered by MCC that may not be known to them. For example, seasonal courses, academic support and other programs. Above all, I would like students to understand that they are not alone on their academic journey. Somebody must have been in their position before and therefore be able to give them advice, encouragement and support to help them keep moving forward."
President of the club, Dy hosts weekly meetings each semester for students to socialize, talk over ideas, plan out events, and work on projects. Meetings are held in the engineering classroom in Bedford for students to use equipment involving electronics and programming. They are introduced to the various specialties of engineering Middlesex offers, including biomedical, chemical, electrical and mechanical.
Dy believes clubs are an important part of the MCC and overall college experience. Being active in the campus community helps students develop important skills and learn more about different perspectives and backgrounds. Clubs can also provide students with options to explore their interests, whether they are pursuing the field or trying a new hobby.
"It makes a big difference to have a community in which students can connect with other students who have similar interests," Dy said. "Through the STEM Engineering Club, students are able to form friendships, improve their abilities in working as a team and in communication, and at the same time gain self-confidence as they learn from each other."
A Computer Aided Design (CAD) engineering technology student, Dustin Chea, of Lowell, is vice president and co-founder of the club. Working full-time while attending school, Chea chose to come to Middlesex because of its flexibility, the ability to engage with professors, and the variety of activities offered, including clubs.
"The club allows us to connect with other engineers in different fields," Chea said. "We come up with designs that open us up to unlimited opportunities and imagination. It shows you there are more opportunities out there. Participating in the club helps you to reach your goals and get into the career field in the future."
In addition to the STEM Engineering Club, MCC's program provides opportunities for students to use equipment, attend field trips, and participate in activities around campus. While receiving guidance from professors, students work with departments across the college and play an active role in the MCC and greater communities.
Both Dy and Chea credit engineering professors Angel Escalona and Cris Algarra, Chair of Engineering, for guiding them through their studies and running the club
"The club has been doing a fantastic job engaging students in hands-on projects and 3D printing activities," Escalona said. "It has become a great way for students to apply what they learn in the classroom while also meeting and connecting with other students. Ratheksuchen and Dustin have done an outstanding job leading the organization, encouraging student participation, and creating opportunities for students to collaborate on meaningful engineering projects."
