Bedford PD Stop Car With Heroin Inside, Cash

No arrests were made due to new, coronavirus-era protocol to give summonses to non-violent offenders.

BEDFORD, MA — What started as a traffic stop ended in Bedford police finding over nine grams of heroin/fentanyl in a car along with cash and BB guns. The stop happened on Thursday night on North Road — Bedford police said there is an ongoing investigation stemming from the stop.

Police seized 9.6 grams of heroin/fentanyl, two BB Guns and $601.00 cash. The person in the car was given a summons for a court hearing — due to new, coronavirus-era protocol, officers have been giving summons to non-violent offenders instead of arrests.

The protocol, which is being followed by police departments across the state, comes from a Supreme Judicial Court ruling that seeks to slow the spread of COVID-19 in jails and prisons and limit the number of people in facilities. The ruling allows some prisoners to be released from jails or state prisons.
