Bedford Police And Fire Celebrate Emergency Dispatchers Week
During the week of April 12-18, public safety agencies take time to reflect on the critical role telecommunications professionals play.
BEDFORD, MA — Bedford first responders are recognizing and honoring emergency dispatchers this week for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
"Our communications officers are vital members of our team, providing first responders with the necessary information and resources they need when responding to emergencies," said Chief Bongiorno. "We're grateful for the great work they do and for their commitment to keeping our community safe."
Bedford's eight Emergency Communication Officers are specially trained to handle thousands of calls for service every year. While their work is done outside of the view of the public, they are an essential resource for first responders and the public alike and serve as the first point of contact for members of the public seeking help in an emergency.

Emergency Communications Officers are on the front lines with first responders ensuring that they have all the information needed to safely respond to calls for service. While the nature of calls has changed in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to assess the situation and identify safety risks for first responders is front and center on every call.
"During an emergency, our Emergency Communications Officers are often the first people residents talk to, making them a critical resource for our team," said Chief Grunes. "Their incredibly important work doesn't go unnoticed and we're glad to honor them during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week."
