Bedford Speed Limit Drops On Unmarked Roads

BEDFORD, MA – Chief Robert Bongiorno and Traffic Enforcement Officer Thomas Devine would like to remind Bedford residents that, effective May 1, the speed limit for roads without speed limit signs has been reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph.

The reduction in the speed limit is an approved measure of the Bedford Board of Selectmen. Chief Bongiorno says that the reduced speed limit will not impact the main roads in town and roads with speed limit signs.

Use of non-posted side streets has increased due to the usage of traffic phone applications like Waze, which sometimes directs drivers off of main roads to avoid congestion. Police have received complaints from some residents about the speed of cars frequenting their streets and drivers committing motor vehicle violations.

"Slowing down is one of the easiest ways to avoid dangerous collisions and has been proven to save lives," Officer Devine said. "In addition to texting and other distractions, speed is the third highest cause of motor vehicle crashes."

According to National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding was a factor in the deaths of 10,111 people in 2016. It accounted for more than a quarter (27%) of all traffic fatalities that year.
