Breathe Easy – MCC Goes Smoke-Free

On Thursday, Nov. 21, Middlesex Community College will join the 1,177 colleges and universities nationwide that have implemented a smoke-free environment. MCC’s new smoke-free policy applies to all students, staff, faculty and visitors to the Bedford and Lowell campuses.

MCC is implementing this new smoke-free policy in conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s “Great American Smokeout” (http://www.cancer.org), a nationwide effort to help people quit smoking.

“Middlesex is committed to creating and providing a safe and healthy environment for all who study and work at the college, as well as for those who visit our campuses,” said MCC President Carole Cowan. “A smoke-free MCC is a campaign that has been in the works for several years. Thanks to the leadership of our Student Government Association, along with the work of our Smoke-Free MCC Committee of administrators and faculty, we have finally been able to realize this important initiative for our community.”

The smoke-free policy applies to both MCC campuses and any property owned or maintained by the college, including indoor facilities, campus grounds, walkways and parking lots, said Cowan.

Also, as part of the Cancer Society’s national smoke-free initiative, Middlesex is offering a variety of resources and support through the Center for Health & Wellness to encourage and assist students and staff to quit smoking.
