Coast Guard Foundation Funds Renovations in Cape Cod
Age-Old Bowling Center to Get a New Lease on Life

Stonington, Conn. — The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that it has funded the renovation of Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod’s on-site bowling center. The hub of family and community activity on the country’s second largest base, the bowling center had fallen into disrepair over time with obsolete scoring equipment software, inoperable ball returns due to a lack of replacement parts, and limited play on some lanes as a result of gutter bumpers that needed replacing. The Foundation provided over $60,000 for repairs that were recently completed by Coast Guard staff.
“When we looked at what was needed for the Coast Guard members stationed on the Cape, the bowling center was at the top of the list,” said Anne Brengle, Coast Guard Foundation president. “As the centerpiece of the morale, welfare and recreation efforts on base, we saw the space as a critical part of how Coast Guard families build their community and get together with friends and family for fun and relaxation.”
Air Station Cape Cod is home to more than 1,500 Coast Guard members and their families. The air station, with its four MH-60T helicopters and three HC-144 fixed-wing aircraft, is the only Coast Guard aviation facility in the northeast, and is responsible for enforcing maritime law, protecting our homeland and preserving the environment in the waters from New Jersey to the Canadian border. Able to launch a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft within 30 minutes of a call in nearly any weather conditions, the Air Station conducts 250 search and rescue missions in an average year including assisting around 90 people in distress, and 50 medevac missions resulting in 58 saved-lives per year on average.

“While we have completely funded the project thanks to the generosity of our donors, led by new board member Tom Niles, a local businessman and avid boater, we have only raised half of the funds needed,” continued Brengle. “We are continuing to reach out to local supporters in the Cape Cod and Boston area to help cover the rest of the expenses. We are thankful to Mr. Niles and those in the community who have stepped up and said ‘yes’ to supporting this project.”
