UPDATED: Three Workers Injured in Gas Main Fire

Three people were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries on Wednesday.

UPDATED, 9:12 p.m. -- Three workers were injured and transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Bedford Police.

Flames were shooting 40 feet into the air from the construction site when police and fire arrived at the scene. The fire spread to overhead utility lines, which knocked out power and utilities to the area. As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, utility companies were working to restore service to the area, according to police. 

Plank Street between Middlesex Turnpike in Bedford and Dunham Road in Billerica will be closed until further notice, according to police. 

Bedford Fire Department and other agencies are investigating the incident. 

UPDATED, 5:01 p.m. 
-- At least two people were transported to Lahey Clinic with injuries because of the gas line fire. Billerica Rescue and Armstrong Ambulance transported the patients. 

UPDATED, 4:55 p.m.
-- Firefighters checked nearby buildings and found no smell of gas or any other issues with those structures. 

UPDATED, 4:50 p.m.
-- The fire is out and the gas has been shut off to the area. 

Bedford, Billerica, and Hanscom Fire remain at the scene. A Burlington engine has been released from the scene. 

ORIGINAL ARTICLE, 4:25 p.m. -- Bedford and Billerica firefighters are fighting a gas line fire at Middlesex Turnpike near Plank Street and Crosby Drive.

The fire is in a National Grid gas line and may have been caused by a break of a high pressure main on Wednesday afternoon. The call to Bedford Fire came in at 3:25 p.m.

There is reportedly at least one person being taken to an area hospital.
